Emergency Drainage Tips: What to Do Before the Engineer Arrives

By Craig Argyle Jan 15, 2024 4 min read

Drainage emergencies rarely give you advance warning. One minute everything is flowing normally, and the next you have sewage backing up through a shower drain, a toilet that will not flush, or an inspection chamber overflowing in the garden. Knowing what to do in those first few minutes can reduce the damage, keep your family safe, and help our engineers fix the problem faster when they get to you.

1. Stop using water immediately

This is the single most important thing you can do. Every toilet flush, tap run, or washing machine cycle adds more water to a system that is already full. If a drain is blocked, that extra water has nowhere to go except back into your property.

Turn off any running appliances such as washing machines or dishwashers. Let everyone in the household know not to use sinks, showers, or toilets until the blockage has been cleared. If the emergency involves a blocked toilet, close the bathroom door and place towels around the base to contain any overflow.

2. Work out where the problem is

Is just one fixture affected, or is the whole house backing up? If only the kitchen sink is slow, the blockage is likely in the waste pipe directly below it. If multiple drains are struggling at the same time, the blockage is further down in the underground drainage system. That distinction matters because it tells our engineers what equipment to bring and where to start.

If you can safely access an outside inspection chamber, lift the cover carefully and look inside. A chamber full of standing water confirms the blockage is downstream. An empty chamber means the blockage is between the chamber and the fixtures inside the house. Don't put your hands into a full chamber or try to clear the blockage yourself, as sewage carries bacteria that can make you seriously unwell.

3. Avoid chemical drain cleaners

Supermarket drain cleaners are designed for minor build-ups in internal waste pipes. They are not designed for underground drain blockages, and using them in an emergency often causes more problems than it solves.

Caustic chemicals can damage plastic and clay pipes, especially at joints. They also make the drain unsafe for an engineer to work on. When we arrive at a property where chemicals have been poured into a blocked drain, we have to take extra safety precautions, which can add time to the job. In a genuine emergency, high-pressure water jetting is far more effective and will not damage the pipework.

4. Protect your property from water damage

If water is coming up through a floor drain, shower trap, or toilet, move any furniture, rugs, or electrical items away from the affected area. Sewage water can ruin soft furnishings and create a health hazard. If possible, open windows to ventilate the room.

For outside overflows, keep children and pets away from the area. Standing sewage in gardens or driveways should be avoided until it has been properly cleaned up after the drain clearance.

5. Call a professional drainage engineer

Our 24/7 emergency drainage team covers the whole of the West Midlands, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire. We typically arrive within one to two hours and carry all the equipment needed to clear the blockage on the first visit. There is no extra charge for evening, weekend, or bank holiday call-outs, and no call-out fee.

When you call, it helps if you can tell us how many fixtures are affected, whether outside drains are overflowing, and roughly when the problem started. That information lets us prepare the right tools and give you a more accurate arrival time.

What happens when our engineer arrives

We start by clearing the blockage using drain rods or high-pressure jetting to restore flow. Once the water is moving again, we run a CCTV camera through the pipe to check for the underlying cause, whether that is root ingress, a collapsed section, fat build-up, or a displaced joint.

That camera check is included at no additional cost. If drain repair work is needed, we will provide a fixed-price quote on site so you can make an informed decision about next steps.
